The planning process for Selebi Phikwe Packers commenced in early 2022, with the team conducting extensive research and analysis of various packhouse configurations and citrus packing machinery. It was essential to identify the most efficient and effective design to meet our operational requirements.
It was decided to install an eight-lane Mafroda sizer with 54 drops as part of phase one, enabling us to pack 45,000 tonnes of citrus before the next sizer is installed. It was truly remarkable to witness the packhouse building and the installation of the machines being completed before our eyes, and we grew increasingly excited to begin packing citrus for both the export and local markets.
In 2024, SPP packed and shipped 3,610 tonnes of grapefruit, oranges, and mandarins to export markets in Europe and the Middle East, as well as local and regional markets. Preparations are underway to pack 22,500 tonnes of citrus in 2025, starting in February and concluding in September. The export markets will expand to include countries in the Far East, as well as the USA.
SPP not only serves as a hub for our citrus operations but also symbolises progress, innovation, and the future of Selebi Phikwe Citrus.
