The planning process for Selebi Phikwe Packers commenced in early 2022, with the team conducting extensive research and analysis of various packhouse configurations and citrus packing machinery. It was essential to identify the most efficient and effective design to meet our operational requirements.
An eight-lane Mafroda line with a modern electronic sorter and 54 drops was installed enabling us to pack 45,000 tonnes of citrus per season. The next line will be installed and ready for the 2028 season. The packhouse building will be expanded from circa 12 000 square meters to 20 000 square meters to accommodate the expansion.
In 2024, SPP packed and shipped 3,610 tonnes of grapefruit, oranges, and mandarins to export markets in Europe and the Middle East, as well as local and regional markets. Preparations are underway to pack 22,500 tonnes of citrus in 2025, starting in February and concluding in September. The export markets will expand to include countries in the Far East, as well as the USA.
SPP not only serves as a hub for our citrus operations but also symbolises progress, innovation, and the future of Selebi Phikwe Citrus and citrus cultivation in Botswana
